PART 1: Power to Arrest & Weapons of Mass Destruction:

(REQUIRED FOR INITIAL GUARD CARD APPLICATION)

Total Course Time: 8 Hours

Part A: Power to Arrest (4 hours)

Requires passage of a written examination with a score of 100%.

The first four hours of the California security guard training is powers to arrest mandated by the State of California (California Business and Professions Code section 7583.7). This training is designed to teach new security guards about the law and how their job falls within the business and professions code.

Modules covered in this training:

The role and responsibilities of a security guard

Basic observation techniques

Where authority comes from

Inspections and searches

Arrest-able offenses

Private persons arrests

Making arrests as well as reporting

In addition to the state standards, our basic powers to arrest security guard training includes areas identified as best practices including intro to sexual harassment, emergency preparedness, checking IDs, and understanding body language.

At the end of the powers to arrest training for the California security guard training is a comprehensive final exam in which the student must achieve 100% to pass.

Part B: Weapons of Mass Destruction & Terrorism Awareness (4 hours)

The second half of the initial 8 hour California security guard training is comprised of a module on terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. The outline of the course as well as much of the content is mandated by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services and was developed in partnership with the private sector. The objective of the course to provide an introduction of identifying and reporting pre-incident indicators as well as assisting in controlling a scene after a terrorist incident. This training utilizes the Department of Consumer Affairs’ Weapons of Mass Destruction & Terrorism Awareness for Security Professionals student workbook and videos. In addition, our course includes an introduction to active shooter incidents.

PART 2: Continuing Education:

(REQUIRED WITHIN 30 DAYS OF STARTING WORK)

Total Course Time: 16 Hours

This second tier of training, in accordance with California Law, provides the student with a total of 16 hours of continuing education, focusing on topics critical to success as a private Security Officer. These mandated training components MUST be completed within the first 30 days of beginning work as a security guard.

 

Topics include:

• Public Relations - Community & Customer (4 Hours)

The purpose of a course on public relations is based on the necessity of security guards dealing with the public at large in a customer service role in addition to security. Topics include discrimination and harassment, respecting others and stereotyping, verbal de-escalation and crisis intervention, diversity, substance abuse, mental illness, ethics, physical manifestation of crime, perception, dealing with the disabled, managing incidents, technology, confidentiality, and reporting to the public.

• Observation & Documentation (4 Hours)

This course is a mandated component security guard training within the first 30 days of beginning work as a security guard. The purpose of this course is to train guards to be more effective in observing their environment and documentation through both written and oral reports. Topics include observation, environmental awareness, patrols, witness questions, group characteristics, report writing, note taking, narrative reporting, and reporting types.

• Communication and its Significance (4 Hours)

This course is a mandated component security guard training within the first 30 days of beginning work as a security guard. The purpose of the communication and its significance course within the guard card training is to help security professionals communicate better with employees, clients, and the public. Topics include how to ask questions, body language, deception, barriers to communication, written communication, communicating through technology, communicating with the press and government, phonetic alphabet and ten codes, as well as de-escalation.

• Liability and Legal Aspects (4 Hours)

This course is a mandated component security guard training within the first 30 days of beginning work as a security guard. The purpose of this training is to ensure security guards are well educated of the laws, rules and regulations that govern their actions as a security officer. Topics include an overview of the constitution, California law, description of crimes, liability, and the role of the security officer.

PART 3: Continuing Education:

(REQUIRED WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF STARTING WORK)

Total Course Time: 16 Hours

This final portion of training is elective coursework. THE GUN RANGE incorporates the following topics into its Phase Three course:

• Tactical Communication

• Searching & Handcuffing

• Criminal Law & Essential Codes

• Courtroom Testimony

Evacuation Procedures (2 Hours) – The purpose of this topic within the security guard training is to understand how to react and facilitate evacuations during and after emergencies.

Access Control (2 Hours) – The purpose of this topic within the security guard training is to provide the guard an understanding of identification, CCTV, access control processes, procedures and technology.

Handling Difficult People (2 Hours) – The purpose of this topic within the security guard training is to enhance the guard’s skills in managing encounters with difficult people.

Workplace Violence (2 Hours) – The purpose of this topic within the security guard training is to help security guards understand the precursors to workplace violence, reporting, as well as how to react in various situations.

Preserving the Incident Scene (2 Hours) – The purpose of this topic within the security guard training is to provide instruction to guards on how to maintain an incident scene until law enforcement arrives.

Crowd Control (2 Hours) – The purpose of this topic within the security guard training is to instruct security guards on best practices on how to manage large crowds.

Management & Supervision (2 Hours) – The purpose of this topic within the security guard training is to enhance the security guards ability to work in

capacities as a supervisor and upper management.

Fire Safety Course (2 Hours) – The purpose of this topic within the security guard training is to teach the security guard characteristics of the different types of fires as well as how to extinguish them.

Officer Safety (2 Hours) – The purpose of this topic within the security guard training is to instruct the security guard on how to maintain personal and team safety at all times.
